The date rapidly approaches: 12-21-2012.
Numerically, this is a brilliantly balanced number, a time-stamp without equal in recent memory, at least when we factor in the hanging participle of impending doom. Whether or not this doom will come to pass is another matter entirely. What is certain in the esoteric sciences is that the date has power because it has been given power. No less, once given, power cannot be retracted. It may be forcibly removed, but a gift cannot be taken back. And 12-21-2012 has long since been given the gift of heavy significance.
The Mayan aspect of the apocalyptic date is limited at best. The adepts of the Way already know that the Maya spoke of cycles and cusps, not of world-ending disasters. The notion that cusps are attended by chaos is neither unique to the Maya nor particularly up for debate in the hard sciences of the mainstream; change is understood as a process but is most detectable at watershed moments when the denouement comes to fruition. Reality is best understood as a narrative told by something we might call God to something else that we might also call God. This is the Riddle of the Twin, and it is reflected in Gemini and in the Hero Twins of Maya faith. What is lost is never lost, but only briefly obscured by other matters. In the end, we must conclude that while Maya priests still living in the world decry the mainstream occultists' use of their calendrical complexities to sell books about the ending of the world, this means nothing. The date, 12-21-2012 stands alone within the context of our own numerological and numeric codes: It is unique enough to spawn imaginary associations.
But there is no imagination at work in the real processes around us, and this has lent the apocalyptic prophecy at the very center of our times a weight it would not have enjoyed in better days. America - the great reborn Rome - is in trouble. The once-solid control the Empire exercised beyond its own borders is shaken by religious and socioeconomic conflicts abroad. If the Imperial Media is to be believed, there are overt rebels in the world, openly opposed to the pseudo-capitalist, faux-democratic institutions of the West, and by "West" we must understand, America. The Pax Americana was built upon the Pax Dollarama, but now the Dollar is not what it once was, and China's Dragon stirs in the East. As it was before, so it shall be again, and so it is - Ask the sages who sleep in the dust of Rome's struggles with Parthia and the latter Persian empire, and the same pattern can be seen playing out as part of the great time cycles. The Maya understood the cycles, even if they did not relate their own world to the details of this age of history. All prophets and all prophecies are functions of their specific times and places.
Athena's Men have been watching, and the truth is clear: Empire was never the spiritual goal of the Founding Fathers' enterprise. But it has come nonetheless, in part because of the vagaries of history, and in part because of the ambition of dreamers who thought they understood the glories of the Classical Age without really bothering to consider the grimy underbelly of the glorious past. Our symbol is the Eagle of the SPQR, and our armies are the legions of the day. Our Coliseum is the mass media, our gladiatorial games are hardly games at all, but rather films, shows, news reports and diversions so realistic that one can hardly tell the one from the other. The binding faith of our civilization is dying, even as polytheism once died, and social change has rocked and continues to rock the foundations of our formerly restrictive civilization. These are not randomly synchromystic resonances, but are rather the very signs and sigils that even the uneducated and uninitiated must instantly recognize as "bad omens". Empires were built to fall. Societies rise because they too must collapse. All things that live must die.
What will happen and when it will be clear that it is happening are difficult things to say, but we can be sure that what has begun will quicken on 12-21-2012. It is unlikely that meteors will cascade down and spread destruction - This close to the date, we should expect that at least one astronomer will have noticed something credible if this was our fate. Solar storms of unprecedented strength are equally unlikely, since Father Sun is unaccountably fond of us. Also, NASA has few if any projections of an imminent solar doom. The Zombie Apocalypse is also not going to happen. Zombies have better things to do than to overwhelm civilization, since any true Way-worker is well aware that a zombie is a spiritual and magical slave retained for things like gardening and house work. Hordes of zombies would require the rise of a Wizard so powerful and so obvious that we would not be interacting via the internet, because we would all be busy dodging demons and global disasters brought on by that Wizard's irresistible power.
There are those who insist that the Antichrist is come, and will soon emerge with clarity upon the World Stage, but the Antichrist is what we make of it. Much turns upon Obama, the true novelty of our age, and proof positive that McKenna's prophecy regarding the emergence of such things is valid. This is a truly Great Man, but in the original sense: A figure so deeply divisive because of his capacity to rise and rule. Greatness is not always positive, since we can also say that Mao and Stalin and Hitler were as "great" as any Napoleon, Alexander or Genghis Khan. It is in the impact of a ruler that greatness can be seen. The judgment regarding goodness or quality is made by history, and never in the days of action. What Obama is or can be is yet to be seen, and his survival is critically important. Those who hope for his ruin are hoping for chaos, rebellion and destruction - never the hallmarks of a comfortable and prosperous age. Politics does not enter into such a consideration, since the various interpretations of law and custom are little more than passing dreams. The human perception of reality is transient and subject to conditions.
What we can know in the esoteric sense is that synchronicity has quickened - the incidence of mystically related causation and meaningful events is on the rise. From all quarters these reports flow in to the collectors of our time. These include the websites dedicated to such things. Ask of the webmasters responsible, the authors, reporters and bloggers, and ye shall receive: Synchronicity is increasing. It has been for some time. The first indications of this phenomenon's intensification were noticed by the Vicar's own cadre in the late 1990s. The uptick has continued apace, and there are those in the mystic community who will insist that an exponential increase has occurred. Of this, the Vicar is less certain; the math for such things is poorly established, and the data sources are limited at best. We can be quite sure, however, that an increase in reports is the same as an increase in events, synchronicitously speaking.
What this means is that something is afoot. But we should take great care in assuming we know what is happening or where it leads. Today, the Vicar was shown digital images of "demons" - massy shadows and white spots, but clear evidence of discarnate intelligences at work - by a colleague whose relationship to the case is personal, being that her sister is encountering some sort of inhabitation evident by supernatural occurrences. The colleague in question is a hard science thinker, and would last week have told the Vicar that there is no such thing as a soul, much less demons - in fact, last week she said precisely this. Experiencing is believing. But the point is not to be missed: Things are changing. There are shifts in the pattern, and the Vicar would dare say that there is a weakening of the barriers between realities.
We should not forget that the world around us and indeed the whole of reality is responsive to our beliefs. Our own minds and spiritual essences influence the universe in ways we cannot imagine. Much of our science is a defense mechanism against this; we can never underestimate the desire of human beings to avoid the perception of responsibility for things. A sense of guilt is a hard master. But we cannot forget either that there are a great many other forces on this world with us - things we are taught not to believe in, but which we are aware of from earliest infancy. Mind the shadows. And don't forget to keep your household gods close and your faith strong. Fear not the dying of the world, since if she does die under us, our own ends will be swift. Instead, recognize that this is an era of change, and that we are on the cusp of... something. So take care what you expect and take greater care what you wish for.
You are almost certain to get it.
